On the coughing ferrets--I have never encountered it myself,
but aren't ferrets susceptible to kennel cough? Wasn't the
older ferret a rescue? Again, I don't really know much about
it but I'm just wondering if kennel cough was ruled out.

Dryer sheets could certainly also be the culprit.
