Peripheral edema seems to be pretty unusual in ferrets but it certainly can=
happen. We had one with advanced hypertrophic cardiomyopathy whose limbs,=
esp. rear limbs used to get like little swollen, stiff sausages near the e=
nd. Massage would return flexibility and mobility for a while. (Obviously=
she was already on meds including levels of Furosemide/Lasix that were gen=
erously above the recommended levels. Over the decades with ferrets in our=
family we've found Lasix to be "what the individual will tolerate" for dos=
ing levels in end stages, and the individuals have varied widely on that sc=
ore, from one with dilative cardiomyopathy and cardiac tumor who could not =
cope with even the textbook max (She would lose not only acceptance of food=
from nasal membrane dryness but she did the opposite of the norm and inste=
ad of becoming more thirsty she would lose thirst.) to several who were ver=
y tolerant of the med with an assortment of cardiac conditions (dilative ca=
rdiomyopathy, and that with ventricular bigemini, hypertrophic cardiomyopat=
hy, Level 3 A/V Heart Block).
