I think Andrea was referring to whole prey.

Sources such as rodentpro.com and gourmetrodent.com provide whole prey to owners of reptiles, birds and carnivorous pets - many of which are much more sensitive to bacteria than ferrets. Their livelihood depends on supplying a quality product.

There are plenty of conscientious farmers around the country who sell direct to the public. Google "organic farmer" or "local meat supplier" or something similar, along with a state.
