I find this coat texture bit interesting, as I have and breed only dark sables with no "fancy color" background. All of them, including my F1 hybrid, have the shorter, harsher textured coats as adults. This type of coat texture also appears much more water resistant...anyone else noticed that?
I have no doubt that the "fancies" have far more health and digestive problems, as the selection of breeding partners was based predominantly on color (or pattern). I do think, though, that dietary needs and requirements do not change that much with age in those without that background, based on the experiences of long time breeders who feed a natural diet.
