In both cases, the diagnosis was based on ruling out everything else. In the
case of Silk, the phenobarbital and pred stopped both her seizures and her
lethargy/extremely high white cell counts. In the case of Rocky, pretty much the
same thing - when we discovered the 'hearsay' of an employee at the pet store
coming down with bacterial meningitis, when we discovered that the other kits
in the same shipment (and 2 subsequent shipments) came down with the same
symptoms and finally when the disease began responding to chloramphenicol when it
did not respond to any other antibiotics..we considered Rocky as having
meningitis. The only way we could have definitely diagnosed it would have been to
have a spinal tap - but this was almost impossible. Rocky was only 10 weeks old
and no vet or specialist in my area was willing to try.
