Updating the status of the 2 year old female showing neurological signs; Sasha.

Over the weekend, she continued to decline. Her seizures were worse and worse; grand mal and petit mal. She experienced grand mal about every 5 minutes and the petit mal were pretty much continuous. She was hypersalivating so much, she didn't produce any urine for around 12 hours despite getting about 120 mls of Ringers in a 24 hour period. Bg was at 189.

Her vet wanted to continue with the pain meds, and early Saturday morning, he called in phenobarbitol to the pharmacy and injectible meds to his office. I wasn't able to get anything into her by mouth until early Sunday evening, when I got her to take around 0.5 ml water.

While she spiked short lived fevers of 103-104, likely due to the seizure activity, it wasn't enough to justify pursuing a diagnosis of a meningitis/encephalitis type of illness.

Rabies were ruled out due to lack of exposure.

Through Sunday evening and today, she has made a good turn-around. She looks better through her eyes. She is up to eating 10 mls of Carnivore Care every 4 hours. She can lift her head and pulls herself off her blankets to empty her bladder.

We're continuing with the buprenorphine and phenobarbitol. Once she is a bit more stabilized, we'll drop the buprenorphine and watch to see what happens.

Tomorrow we'll stop the injectable antibiotics (Amoxi and Baytril) and go back to the oral. We'll discontinue fluids when no longer needed.

At this point, my vet is thinking epilepsy. I am unable to find anything doing a search on the internet, but haven't searched the FHL archives yet.

If anyone has had a ferret with epilepsy, could you let me know what to expect? Any info is appreciated.

Thank you to those that offered information to my first post,
Julie
