Hi Kim,
Adenocarcinomas of the prepuce are a malignant
type of cancer that can and usually will return if
"clean borders" are not achieved surgically. Yes, a
PU surgery is the next step. Most ferrets do just fine
after a PU surgery. Unfortunately preputial carcinomas
can also spread to the lymph nodes and to internal organs,
so a PU surgery along with removing wide borders of the prepuce
and the preputial carcinoma area is the best thing to do.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
BTW a PU surgery should NOT be done for a ferret with
an enlarged prostate due to adrenal gland disease. This does
not help correct the prostate problem or the urethra obstruction
problem from the enlarged prostate.
However a PU surgery should be done for prepuctial adenocarcinomas.
