Belinda, hobs usually go into heat at the age of 6-9 months (sometimes
later) -depending on the season it is. (If he is 6-7 months old in winter,
he will probably start it in spring.) The males' heating season lasts from
spring to fall, but if he is kept in a flat, it can also happen that the
heating won't stop because of the temperature and regular light. (It makes
their body "think" it's spring time.)

Of course, they have a stronger odor, and more often you bathe him is the
stronger the smell is. And they will mark nearly everything they can reach.
Hobs are much more aggressive with other ferrets and animals than neutered
ones. And also, during heat, they try to get out to look for a partner. Many
ferrets get lost at this time. :(
My male, before he was neutered, also "practised sex" on his toy polar bear.
;-)
The problem with not neutering a hob is that that it's a big stress for
their body, especially for their heart. Hobs usually die much younger than
neutered ones.
