Re: Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts

Actually, it was Judy Cooke's letter about the emergency work which
gave all of the details. She writes better than I do!

Everyone at the IFC was given specific work to do in this effort, and
honestly, I can only keep up with some of them because so much labor
is going on behind the scenes.

There are some advances the IFC figured people would love to know
about. For some time now there have been shelters and vets helping
outside the worst hit areas, but Sunday marked the first day for vets
to be allowed by the authorities to enter New Orleans. These first
vets in are specially trained vets working with the ASPCA, and their
mission is multi-fold since they also need to tackle potential
zoonotic threats to human health. For instance, they will be
collecting and giving appropriate rabies vacs to the domestic animals
found. Thank you to National Public Radio's All Things Considered
for providing this information.

Are you someone from New Orleans who was away when the hurricane hit,
or who was forced by circumstances to leave animals behind? If so,
please, report the locations and details to
Katrinaanimalrescue@yahoo.com
or
1-225-578-611
and to
DISASTER@ASPCA.ORG
(212) 876-7700, ext. 4700
giving name, address of the confined animal, species, number of
animals, and when food and water would run out. Chere -- who is an
old hand at animal rescues during natural disasters, and is getting
supplies into the region to help both humans and animals even as you
read this -- reports that shelter workers are following some other
agency crews through neighborhoods for animal rescue. Chere and
Sharon to thank for the most of this information on reporting and
sheltering.

Were you evacuated to Houston and need to shelter your pets?
