Subject: another biological reasons albino polecats may not survive

I haven't read it fully but just ran into this paper on visual field defects in albino ferrets and it seemed like it would be of interest:
http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/neurobiol/pdf_hoffmann/garipis_vis_res_03.pdf

The abbreviated visual field is interesting. Loss of peripheral vision in humans in one of the factors related to optic nerve damage (as with glaucoma), so perhaps the optic nerves do not develop well in these ferrets or are much more vulnerable to damage.
