Today's report from the ASPCA is that grids of experts have been combing the city and right now are removing about 150 to 200 animals each day. As more of the flooding is reduced they expect the number to increase.

Yesterday, they wound up also finding an elderly man when they went to help his pitbull.

People here will be glad to know that all of the police horses, and a good number (all?) of the French Quarter mules, along with a number of other equines are safe in a special shelter north of New Orleans.

In Texas some of the evacuees who arrived with animals are being helped by the teams there; all they need to do is to ask. There are hundreds of such animals, and at least one has already given birth in the emergency shelter.

Teams are going through all of the stricken areas as access, time, and numbers of specially trained personnel permit.

There have so far been some ferrets helped -- maybe a few dozen(?) -- but for ferrets the numbers needing help and the numbers of shelters helping them which will need help are expected to be larger when evacuees find that they might not be able to care for their animals, even if only temporarily.
