My 6 1/2 yr old male ferret has insulinoma, had surgery in 8/04 to resect
his pancreas, has been on 0.5ml of pediaprednisone 2x day until 7/05 when his BG
was tested and was 52. The vet upped his dosage to 0.7ml 2x a day after
that. His abdomen has been gradually getting bigger over the past several months
and the vet and I discussed putting him on proglycem and cutting his
pediapred dosage as we thought perhaps his girth was secondary to the pediapred.
My
vet saw in the dosing manual something that concerned her about proglycem in
that recent findings have suggested that it isn't as effective for treating
insulinoma as previously thought. She posted about it on a vet site that she
belongs too and got several responses that in essence said that pediapred does
not, except in rare cases, cause ferrets to gain weight like humans do when
on this medication. And the opinion was that proglycem wasn't as effective as
previously thought and that pediapred was the best choice. Now my question,
what is your opinion about this. And have you used proglycem with success? alone?
in conjunction with pediapred. Please, I would like to know what you think. He had
a fasting BG today and it was 43 and we upped his pred to 0.8 2x a day. And he is a
poor surgical candidate so we do not feel that is an option.
Thanks,
Ann Hehl
