Subject: Strange illness - poss poisoning?

Two days ago my 1.5 year old ferret became really depressed and would not eat or drink and began vomiting and straining to go to the loo without effect. The odd thing was that his eyes, ears, nose, mouth, tongue, paw pads were bright pink. The next day I also noticed he had an itchy pink rash all over his body.

I took him to the vets and they prescribed baytril and said it could either be a viral or bacterial infection he picked up or poss. septicemia! I don't think they knew really. He is picking up and improving now, but it was scarey.

If anyone has any ideas as to what this could be so that I could try and avoid this happening again or if you think it might be infectious, I would be grateful for any suggestions. He does go for walks in the woods and did dig in our compost heap which has garden cuttings in it (which is why I think maybe he ate something poisonous). I'm also in the UK.

Thanks.
