Darla the skinny ferret who lives in a pet store has been to a vet. She was
icteric, had yellow ears,dehydrated and diarrhea. The pet store told me her
stool was normal but she was not eating much for about 3 days.
Yesterday my friend and I took her and she was admitted for
subqfluids(couldn't find vein}
Her xray showed enlarged kidney. U/a sent to lab
Ph 7.0
Specific grav. 1.020
Appear. turbid

Bilirubin 3+
color amber ( I saw it and it looked very dark and reddish to me}
Blood 2+

RBC 3-10 HPF
Bacteria 4+ ( I'm not sure how urine was obtained
Epithelia few
Amorphous phosphates Many
All other negative for any crystals mucous yeast
Her xray showed enlarged kidney and some consolidation in one lung on bottom.
No fever.
Blood was done today, results will be in tomorrow.
Vet feels she may have Helicobacter inf. and cystitis. She is being given
Amoxi 0. 1 ml
bid and metronidazole 0.2 ml bid. I thought the bottle had the
concentration of mg/ml,but I didn't have my glasses and it doesn't say. Darla weighs 482
grams.
I asked about Pepto Bismol for the helicobacter and was told they don't use
it on animals because the formula has changed and something was added and is
not safe anymore, but the vet couldn't tell me what it was. I couldn't take
Darla to my ferret vet because she doesn't belong to me and the owner wanted to
go to this hospital.
Has anyone heard of a CHANGE IN PEPTO BISMOL? My vet still uses it as far as
I know. I asked her if she was thinking of Kaopectate since I know that has
been changed.
Anyway, Darla was less yellow,more active and I took her home with me so I
will give her subq fluid dropper feed her A/d Every 2-3 hours and make sure she
has meds. She did one small, but almost normal diameter med. brown poop and
I've seen her void twice since 4 hours I have her. Any advice appreciated.
