Subject: [ferrethealth] Pepto
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Pepto is bismuth subsalicylate. The bismuth salt is what they think acts
like
an antibiotic in the triple regimen used for years to treat human
helicobacter
infections. the inactive ingredients are also salicylates.

This is related to aspirin ( acetasalicylic acid) , if you read the label
of peptobismol it will say
don't take if have allergies to aspirin, or prone to bleeding, etc

But I don't want people to think giving the triple antibiotic treatment
for helicobacter
is dangerous. Just make sure vet approved, and dosing is appropriate for
weight.
It is also good to know what is in something you are giving, for
example, if you have a child
with chicken pox that you know you can't give aspirin to because of
Reyes's syndrome risk
you may not have known you also can't give pepto-bismol ( and kaopectate
with their
change of formula).

A great reason to always read the labels for the ingredients when you get
over the counter meds.
Also, be aware, pepto comes in maximum strength, with more of the
salicylate per teaspoon than
the regular strength. If you are giving it as told but you pick up the
maximum strength you may inadvertently overdose the ferret. Make sure
check the labels, and change the dose appropriately based on the
strength you have.
