Subject: [ferrethealth] Burst Adrenal Gland (Somewhat Graphic)
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hello,

One of my ferrets, Loki, had surgery this morning to remove an
adrenal gland. My vet called me immediately after he finished her
surgery to tell me that it turned out to be her right adrenal gland,
but that the moment he touched the gland, it literally exploded. He
said he didn't even have a chance to do anything. He simply touched
it, and that was all it took. Fragments of the gland, and a mucous
like substance spread throughout her abdominal cavity. He did
everything he could to remove any remains of the adrenal tissues, but
he's concerned that, despite his best efforts, that there COULD be
some that he couldn't see or find. He said that there is the
possibility that if any fragments were left behind, it could attach
somewhere and begin to grow again.

I was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this or has any
thoughts on it. I have questions now that I was much too worked up
to think of while I was talking with my vet. Such as what could have
caused this? I can't help but wonder if her adrenal disease went
undiagnosed too long and caused this. This is such a strange thing
that's happened to my little girl. I just hope she pulls through ok,
with no more complications.

Any thoughts?
