Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Burst Adrenal Gland (Somewhat Graphic)
To: <ferretlover@hideyhole.org>, <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

My Possum had a ruptured left adrenal gland. The local animal shelter asked me to pick him up last February. He had a very huge mass that you could clearly feel. My vet went in within a few days. His spleen was humongous and was removed. His left adrenal gland was also huge and had ruptured, with blood everywhere. He removed what he could and suctioned as best as he could. Pathology indicated that it was malignant (can't remember exactly what type of malignancy). My vet said he probably wouldn't have lived another week without surgery. He lost 1/2 lb. immediately following his surgery. That was how large the adrenal gland and spleen were. He came in weighing well over 4 lbs. He eventually settled in at about 3.5 lbs.

Possum did well and was with me for about 6 months. He always had that cancer smell to him so I knew there was more in there. A week or so before he died, he lost an enormous amount of weight, over 1/2 lb. in just a few days. I started hand-feeding him but he got weaker and thinner. He never seemed to be in pain, just tired. I got up one Saturday morning to find him dead. I immediately took him in for a gross necropsy. My vet said the cancer has metastisized to the liver. His liver was a mess, all mottled with growths.
