James,
My girl just went through this last week. It was a pretty easy sugery on her as far as they go - she was actually running around like normal that evening, but I kept her apart from her cagemates at night so nobody would sit on her tail or anything unpleasant. She's still doing fine and doesn't seem to have any discomfort now. Her chordoma was at the tip of her tail and was a little smaller than a pea since we caught it quickly. The vet took about and inch and a half to two inches off. Her tail was shaved about an inch above the amputation and the end was stitched up with self-dissolving stitches and looked quite tidy. She's on antibiotics for two weeks most-surgery. Her current nickname is Stumpy (as horrible as it sounds, I think she likes it - she gives me kisses when I call her that!). My understanding is that chordomas just keep growing and will become uncomfortable for them if they get too big and they can even burst, so it's better to do the amputation sooner than later. Please feel free to email me directly if you have any specific questions that I can answer for you.
