Subject: [ferrethealth] Squamous Cell Carcinoma
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
Hello,
Recently my Ferret ( Binny ) who is at the Ripe ole age of 5 was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma, which was located on his lower jaw. Due to the nature of the Cancer The Vet and I both agreed to have it removed as quickly as possible. I had both X-rays and a Cat scan Done on Binny to see the extent of the Cancer in his jaw. The Dr said that the cancer itself had not invaded the Jaw bone. The removal of the Tumor went very well, and Binny is up and running around as usual. Although it has been two weeks after the Operation, There appears to be no signs of the Tumor Growing back at this present time. Although my vet warned me not to get Jumping for Joy yet.
After Reading all the literature I could find on this type of cancer, I found Dr williams Website and have been pretty much enlightened and knocked down by what I have learned. I have Opted to have the Chemotherapy and Radiation Treaments Done in hopes to prevent it from coming back or getting rid of what they called Microscopic tumors which may be present. I know it is said that Radiation and Chemotherapy does not appear to be benificial.
I guess after all of this info, What I am getting too is, Has there been any Ferrets that have survived this type of Cancer? Has there been any advancements in this areas of Cancer in Ferrets, Is there something else I should try or do or My vet Do? I believe right now I am doing all that can be done, but I am afraid that with everything I am trying to do, I may be missing something very Important.
I know prognosis does not look good but for my Binny I am staying stong and hopeful, becausue he himself is as crazy and Strong from the First day he came hopping into my life.
Any answers or information on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks you
Doug
