_Biology and Diseases of the Ferret, 2nd edition_ has several paragraphs (and of course related refs later) for a section on Myeloid Leukemias themselves in ferrets on pages 241 and 242. Since the syndrome you saw can develop into leukemias in multiple species here are a few notes from it, and there may be more in other vet texts but I don't have the time to look right now. See which ferret vet texts your vet has and if I get a chance to look in any others which I have I'll do so.

"Myeloid leukemias ... derived from common pluripotenitial stem cells ... Viral infection, irradiation, and genetic mutation are suspected causes of myeloid leukemia ... Other hematopoietic organs may also be viably affected and clinically recognized as splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, and lymphadenopathy... histologically leukemic cells are distributed in variable degrees in bone marrow, spleen, liver, lymph nodes, and other tissue organs... Several types... observed in ferrets ... megakarocytic leukemia, myelomonocytic leukemia, erythroid leukemia, an granulocytic leukemia"

Googling makes this look like it MIGHT be promising but I do not have access to the article:
>[PDF] CC-10004 Celgene Moussa Khobzaoui, Hans-Jürgen Gutke & >Michael Burnet*
>File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat - View as HTML
>respiratory models and emetic potency in a ferret model. In vitro ... >myelodysplastic
>syndromes and myeloproliferative diseases. ...
>www.biomedcentral.com/content/pdf/cd-596609.pdf - Oct 4, 2005

but
myelodysplastic ferret

brings up nothing Pubmed. You may want to search there with some synonyms or keywords to help your vet investigate and all of us learn.

In emedicine (humans med):

http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic2695.htm

Here are synonyms and related keywords from emed to help with your searching:

>Myelodysplastic Syndrome

>Synonyms and related keywords: MDS, preleukemia, refractory >dysmyelopoietic anemia, smoldering leukemia, subacute myelogenous >leukemia, dysmyelopoiesis, refractory anemia, RA, RA with ringed >sideroblasts, RARS, RA with excess blasts, RAEB, RAEB in >transformation, RAEB-T, anemia, blood disease, hematopoietic >disorders, leukemia, acute leukemia, refractory anemia with ringed >sideroblasts, refractory anemia with excess blasts, refractory anemia >with excess blasts in transformation, chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, >CMML, hematopoietic stem cell injury, apoptosis, programmed cell >death, petechiae, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, epistaxis, gum >bleeding, hemoptysis, hematuria, enlarged spleen, pneumonias, >urinary tract infections, secondary acute leukemia, primary MDS, >secondary MDS, leukemogenic chemicals, insecticides, weed killers, >fungicides

Anyway, not if you want to search as well you have some places to start, and you have some information which may hopefully help you.
