Subject: RE: [ferrethealth] HELP! - VET ADVICE NEEDED - drug reaction?

Imuran is an immune suppressant.

http://www.medicinenet.com/azathioprine-oral/page2.htm

Here is a list of side effects in humans which seems similar in the veterinary sites found later:
>SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite or diarrhea may >occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. >Unlikely but report promptly: hair loss, unusual fatigue, stomach pain, >joint or muscle pain, vision changes. Very unlikely but report promptly: >yellowing of eyes or skin, darkened urine, unusual bleeding or bruising, >unusual lumps or growths. In the unlikely event you have an allergic >reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of >an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble >breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your >doctor or pharmacist.

It is something for which the medical history and medical conflicts (including of herbals) need to be taken seriously

In http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/medmaster/a682167.html
notice the precautions section and the pancreatic caution.

That is echoed in
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_azathioprine.html
>Similarly, azathioprine can promote pancreatitis. Again, signs of >nausea/intestinal upset can result. If this occurs, discontinue >azathioprine and notify your veterinarian.

I am unsure why this med is given in this case if the primary problem is pancreatitis.

SIDE EFFECTS
One of the main issues with azathioprine is a problem with the bone marrow suppression. Cells of the bone marrow are rapidly dividing and thus at risk for suppression from azathioprine. For this reason, at least in early stages of use, complete blood counts (CBCs) are monitored frequently, typically every 2 weeks for the first couple of months.

Signs of a bone marrow problem that might be observable at home include abnormal bruising or inappropriate bleeding (bloody nose, bloody stool, blood in urine, excess bleeding from a minor wound etc.) If bone marrow suppression has not occurred in the first couple of months of therapy, it is unlikely that it will occur later on.

Some patients develop a liver toxicity with azathioprine. This should resolve with discontinuation of the medication but it is important to watch for any signs of nausea, diarrhea, or appetite loss. If these occur, especially in the first few weeks of starting azathioprine, discontinue the medication and notify your veterinarian of these effects.

Similarly, azathioprine can promote pancreatitis. Again, signs of nausea/intestinal upset can result. If this occurs, discontinue azathioprine and notify your veterinarian.
