Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Using milbemycin for demodex
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi Roger--

I have a ferret w/chronic demodex issues and have been using
ivermectin 1% solution for over a year now. Spot's demodex will
clear up while he's on it but if I stop, it returns. I tried Goodwinal
ointment topically but it did no good, so after discussing
milbemycin w/my vet I wound up going back to the ivermectin.

Milbemycin, as you probably know, is the active agent in
Interceptor and Spot could have gone on the kitten dose but it
wouuld have been expensive and involved daily pilling.

I have had no problems with the ivermectin except that when I
initially used it, after the first successful round of treatment, he
began developing irritation at the sites where it was injected sub-q.
Since it can also be given orally, I switched to that route although it
doesn't seem quite as effective. I use an insulin syringe w/needle
removed to dose precisely so don't need to dilute w/prop. glycol.

Spot has had some possibly neuro signs since a surgery 18 months
ago so I was afraid the ivermectin would exacerbate the issue, or
that he would develop overdose or toxicity neuro signs from
longterm use, which is why approx. every 30 days I take him off the
meds for a week or so. So far, he has tolerated it very well and we
haven't seen any signs of side effects.

As for *why* he can't seem to shake the demodex, no-one can
figure it out. he's old and probably immunocompromised but
otherwise healthy, so it will remain a mystery....

Hope this is helpful,
Skyla
