Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Using milbemycin for demodex
Thanks, Skyla.
I used ivermectin orally years ago for heartworm prevention, but
switched to Revolution. That, unfortunately, kills most parasites
*except* demodex. Of course the dose of ivermectin needed for demodex
treatment is higher than needed for heartworm prevention, so I really
don't have the experience with it for this application.
My vet explained that milbemycin is in the same family as ivermectin,
but is supposedly somewhat safer as far as the neuro issues go. Your
comments about the cost and convenience are well taken, though.
Good luck with Spot - as I understand demodex is very hard to get rid
of, especially since they're normally present in small numbers anyway.
To be honest, I don't know why Daisy has an overgrowth of them either
- she's not immunosuppressed as far as we know.
