Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] A QUESTION FOR VETS
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

As a vet tech I think I can help consolidate, clarify the lab
turnaround time issue:

If one sends out to UTenn for an adrenal panel, the cost is yes
around $200 for the client and they run the tests weekly. So if your
sample arrived just after they had done it for the week, you'd have
to wait til the following week for it to be run and then add time for
communication from lab>>Vet>>you.

Since the disease itself is not life threatening, this delay shouldn't
cause a problem. IF however, your male ferret was suffering
urinary blockage due to enlarged prostate caused by adrenal
disease, your vet should have been able to diagnose AT Least That
problem by exam and clinical signs i.e. w/out the adrenal panel.

Your vet could have sent out a cbc/chemistry panel or done it in-
house. Turn around time for basic bloodwork like this should take
24-48 hrs barring a long holiday weekend. This bloodwork would
show kidney and electrolyte values which would be abnormal if
your ferret was blocked, and prompt action could have been taken.

Could your ferret have had other issues going on, or the blockage
occured suddenly *after* he had been seen by the vet ?
