Well, we have had ferrets in the family for almost 25 years, and almost all of the ones who had surgery were over the age of 5 years old, since few of ours have developed health problems needing surgery any younger. The oldest one we personally have had surgery done on was around 8 and 1/2 years old if memory serves. We have never lost a ferret in surgery and the only one lost post-surgically turned out to be full of hidden lymphoma (which can happen sometimes).
We decide on whether to do surgery or not based upon HEALTH, NOT ON AGE. As a result we do a lot of pre-op testing and consider it well worth the cost, given the survival rate here. All pre-op ferrets in our family get CBC with Chemistry Panel, and any over a certain age (usually 5 or 6 years here) or with some symptoms also get at least a chest x-ray and sometimes a chest ultrasound pre-op.
