Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Calix needs some help
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Just wanted to let everyone know that Calix wasn't doing so good yesterday. We had
started him on the clarimythicin (I'm not sure I spelled that right) the day before
yesterday and yesterday morning he had a major bloody stool. We called the vet
before we even got it cleaned up and I guess we didn't describe very well because he
didn't seem to worried but we took him down anyway (stool sample and all) and
when the vet saw the sample he said "it's a good thing you brought him in" So he
had intestinal bleeding, we took him off the meds and put him on carafate and
amoxi. The did blood work there at the clinic (which they normally send it off,
except in this case) and his red blood cell count was 8.5 (should be around 40) and
his white blood cell count was low but he didn't give me a number. He mentioned
that he might need a bone marrow transfusion (or whatever) but that he wasn't sure
it would work or be safe right now. And he also said that we could go to UGA, but it
would cost upwards of $1000. Right now we're giving the meds a try. Yesterday
afternoon after one dose of meds, he had black tarry stools. Then last night before
bed I noticed his stool was normal (except for the smallest area of black). Then this
morning it was normal completely. He isn't fighting too much to take the meds, I
think they might at least be making him feel better in general. He's eating, but he's
back to eating off the spoon instead of out of the bowl...which is fine by me, I'll do it
if that's what it takes. Is there anything we can do besides give meds to help him
with his blood cell count? Is there anything that helps that? Oh and the vet will want
to do another CBC to see if he's doing any better or not by Wednesday, perhaps
even Monday. And his temperature was still at 103.5...same as before and after
surgery. His weight is staying generally the same give or take a few grams.

Thanks,
Ann
