It's my understanding that Ferretonin is the exact same thing as the male mink implant (5.4 mg), just one that's been gas sterilized, ready to implant. Yes, the mink implant is a lot cheaper, somewhere in the vicinity of 75 cents each, sold in bulk quantities.
Tim from Melatek told me that Neo-dynamics no longer sells the mink implants to individuals or vets for use in ferrets, primarily due to the sterility issue, apparently not a concern in a fur-bearing animal that will soon be killed for its fur.
