Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: melatonin

Given the hundreds of studies involved someone who knows that I have the first edition of the PDR for supplements suggested that i look there. No help. The only adverse effects were in people who need to avoid grogginess (accident prevention), people who have depression (which worsens), and juveniles (including teens) who are prone to seizure disorders since some worsen temporarily when melatonin is used.
I hope that I am not the only one searching medical references to see if there if any possible explanation found. Most of those databases don't work well in advanced search modes I have noticed, but work fine with one or two words or quote mark enclosed phrases.
So far I have tried about 5 different search combos, and for one there are almost 100 references i have not gotten to and may not have the time to get to.
Still NOT finding anything to support the premise that melatonin was the culprit or even a culprit in this death, or anything that even suggest a mechanism.
I am running into a pile of interesting studies like this SIDS one in relation to weather (increased rates related to long days):

which meshes well with this showing low melatonin levels are more likely to be associated with SIDS:

I don't know if SIDS occurs in ferrets but I have encountered it in a New World Primate decades ago so it's not just human.
BUT, I just am NOT running into anything which even hints as support of the premise. The closest is that the one tiny, lethargic study ferret, but that is still open to interpretation according to some vets I have asked, and it did not involve death, let alone sudden death. It's not like I have not been rigorously looking, either.
I think that others should start searching medical references, both veterinary and human, too.
