Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] ADV test q's
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>
I would like to add a comment here, if I may.
I had a pair of ADV positive ferrets...Bancho and Tuzigoot...who were both
from New Zealand. Many of the ferrets I brought over from NZ tested
positive for ADV...with both the CEP and ELISA tests., although, only 1, to
my knowledge, ever actively shed the virus and we know, for a fact, he WAS
exposed to another actively shedding ADV ferret.
My point is most of these ADV positive, New Zealand ferrets, had never been
exposed to an ADV source, so they were ADV positive from New Zealand. New
Zealand's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestries (MAF) states in their
literature that ADV has never presented itself in New Zealand.
So..what was present in these New Zealand ferrets that caused a positive
result in both the tests? Were both of these tests giving a false positive
because of an unknown antibody?
It should be noted here that Tuzigoot, a small female, tested negative by
the CEP test, but a very faint positive with the ELISA test. Bancho showed
a standard positive on both. None of the other ferrets who lived with them,
every tested anything but negative for the tests administered.
Both of these tests can be influenced by other factors. I do not believe
that any of the New Zealand ferrets really had ADV, (With the exception of
the known exposure and death) rather a reaction to some other influence.
I still use the ELISA saliva tests for spot checks and believe, for in
almost all applications, it is accurate
And, BTW, I DID treat my two New Zealand ferrets as ADV positive...I never
took them public nor allowed any 'guest' ferrets in my house. I always wore
clean clothes when I knew I would be visiting a home with a ferret.
