I've found that the ELISA test will pick up Aleutian Disease earlier
than the CIEP, when I have had a pos. test by ELISA and a neg. test by CIEP
the ferret has always gone on to test pos. by both tests later in the year.
BUT long term positives ferrets with a dormant virus will test neg more
often with Alisa than with the CIEP. Due to the nature of the Aleutian Virus
all known tests will give incorrect results during the life of an infected
ferret. Most research on Aleutian Disease was done on Mink but until a
research scientist tells me different I take all precautions that Mink
breeders use and apply them to my ferrets.
There were shipping and manufacturing problems with the Quick Test Kits
in the past but a lot of the problems were/are down to the test not being
done incorrectly, especially the removal of food for one hour. We do about
500 saliva tests a year and I find food particles in the ferrets mouth at
lest 5% of the time. You have to remember all these tests were designed to
be done every 3 months to pick up positive ferrets not the annual/occasional
testing that we normally do. Chris.
