Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Taking kits away from mum at 2-3 weeks of age?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

The intestinal villi in the ferret ileum does not reach matured state till approximately 9 weeks of age.

Not suckling can cause mechanical differences in skull shape, in fact in ferrets who are even older (6 weeks) there is still enough skull plasticity that there are differences between dry kibble fed and soft kibble fed ones in skull form.

The tracheal secretions of kits still not past natural complete weaning ages vary from those of kits who are past natural weaning age; this may be one reason that respiratory infections are more common in young kits.

These are some of the things I found in actual studies Pubmed when looking into developmental reasons to improve the APHIS standards for ferrets in the U.S. so try Pubmed.

Weaning normally is a gradual process in ferrets.
