Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: ADV from NZ ferrets
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

One thing that I have learned from a couple of years of trying to somewhat follow developments of new and sometimes novel medical approaches for cytokine storms (a type of immune system over-reaction which seems to a large part of the problem with DIM, and which is the big worry with Bird Flu in people so you may run into mention in the news) is that there is a LOT of research going on into diseases where the problem is more the misbehavior of the immune system than the disease itself. Huge, huge, amounts of research and some real progress.

ADV is that sort of disease. When the damage occurs it is because the ferret's immune system has caused plaques to be laid down in tissues.

One of my hopes is that people with ADV+ ferrets come out of the closet.

Another is that people test for this on a regular basis as a normal part of good ferret veterinary care.

A third is that the research going on for other diseases where the immune system's behavior is itself part of the problem will lead to some useful medical approaches for ADV ferrets. We've certainly had that happen with meds for other diseases that first were developed for other species.

When ECE was first being seen there were a lot of people who hid that they had that in their ferrets (and that still seems to happen now and then), but once ways to deal with it began to be available people opened up more, and that sharing from opening up itself helped further progress in treatment so it was a very good thing for ferrets when people stopped hiding. Hopefully, that clearing of the air will happen with ADV, too.
