Subject: [ferrethealth] our vet is stumped, please help...
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
hi. "jack" is a 19 month old late neuter male, very healthy until now. he got an upper respiratory infection, his lungs were clear. he was given an injection of baytril by the vet, then came home with baytril tabs. he was on baytril for 3 days, the 3rd day, (sunday, of course), he presented with hind end paresis. jack is alert, strong, and his usual self, except he can't walk. stopped the baytril, and saw vet mon.a.m. physical exam concluded nothing. jack's spleen and liver were fine, although vet did say she couldn't palpate his kidneys because of jack's fat rolls. jack does have sensation as demonstrated by putting his tail and feet in water and the pinch test. if you put your finger on his foot, he will curl his toes around it..he does try to pull his legs up under him, with only fair success. vet has taken 2 full body x-rays, to rule out injury,(he was caged when this started, so it was a lonshot from the beginning), but both negative. he's been tested for insulinoma 3 times and adv twice, both negative. all of his bloodwork came back well within acceptable parameters, except his WBC which came back at 10.3, just slightly elevated and probably due to the upper resp. infection to start with. this is now thurs. and he came home from the vets with no diagnosis, and still the hind leg paresis. no better, no worse. through all of this his appetite has been excellent,he is alert, and he is urinating and moving his bowels normally, nothing has changed with him except the paresis.i have the actual bloodwork results if anyone feels they need them, but i compared them to dr. susan brown's list of acceptable, and they all are. vet is stumped, we don't know where to go from here. jack was on a normal saline drip mon. and tues. to flush his system of the baytril, just in case. one set of bloodwork was drawn mon. before saline drip, and second set drawn wed., after drip was stopped tues. he is now starting amoxacillin for the upper resp. infection. his cagemates are showing no signs of illness. any ideas? thanks, donna
