Subject: [ferrethealth] Fat Ferret
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

Has anyone heard that Melatonin might cause a ferret to gain weight?
3 months ago all my ferrets got Melatonin implants.
Parris, 6-1/2 year old female is a *test* ferret to see if the melatonin
might help prevent adrenal growths. We had an ultrasound done, she has just
a very small beginning of the left gland.
Since the implant, she has gained almost 8oz. Her diet is unchanged, the
same as all my ferrets, they get no unhealthy treats. I switched from
ferretone to a small amount of salmon oil for the omega3.
She is less active, *resting* often while playing. I have had two BG levels
run in three months, 92, 96. She has never had a reading higher than 98, so
we consider this normal for her. At the time of the implant, Parris had a
complete blood panel done, all results were good.
While I love to tip her over and bury my face in that warm squishy tummy, I
also know this fat is not healthy.
Anyone else had a similar experience?
Ardith
