Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Question on Rats
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

---I have had ratties for years (sweet little things).
Cheese should only be given as a treat (much the same
as seeds or meat). They require a diet high in fresh
fruits, veggies and corn (no raw broccoli though). I
made a homemade mix for mine which kept them very
healthy (equal parts mixed veggies (I used frozen
ones)-like cauliflower, green beans, peas, carrots-
corn niblets, brown rice, and Hagen parrot pellets
[the ones that smell like fruit loops - they are a
flat disc shape and different colours]). Both my rats
lived to be over 5 years of age on that diet -which is
rare for ratties (along with lots of exercise). I
supplemented with a tablespoon each evening of mixed
fresh fruit.
Hope that helps.
