Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Gain weight
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

Yes, the weight of a ferret is not the be-all and end-all of it's measure of health.

Right now, we're treating Cubby for helicobacter. He is finally starting to get a belly, but his muscle mass is still poor. We don't have a definite diagnosis of helicobacter for him as yet, but we're trying to treat his symptoms as such because the next option is surgery to biopsy his colon for IBD and biopsy his pancreas for any problems that might exist. We had given him pred for about a month, and it hadn't helped the problem at all, so I don't think it's IBD (because steroids would be the main treatment for IBD). Any other prognosis would be grave, so we're hoping that Cubby does indeed have helicobacter.

Muscle mass is important, but in order to acheive that you must have a ferret who is healthy enough to eat and play normally. This can be quite hard, especially when you have a sick ferret. As Cubby puts on weight, we interact with him, trying to get him to play. It is a slow process.

:If she gained some but hit a plateau she may be at a good weight for:herself, or may simply need to put on some more muscle mass now.
