Subject: [ferrethealth] Insulinoma and adrenal disease
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
Hi
My ferret has insulinoma and was operated in March and is now being successfully treated with diazoxide. During the last month he's suffered from gradual hair loss and significant itching. A treatment for mites seems to have stopped the itching, but the hair loss seems to be continuing, especially along his back.
I'm now assuming that he's got adrenal disease and will be taking him back to the vet for a blood test.
Regarding what to do next, I'm not sure he's an ideal candidate for operation as he's very thin and finding an experienced ferret vet to operate in the UK is difficult. Would it even be worth the expense as his life time is limited anyway due to the insulinoma?
Are Lupron and Melatonin the two usual drugs for treatment of the symptoms?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Liz
