Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] recurrent fur loss
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

When Nyssa was three we started seeing what we thought
was classic adrenal symptoms, including the sort of
loss of fur you describe. It came and went, as did a
somewhat (not hugely) swollen vulva. Our vet at the
time claimed that he had seen this and if he went in
and did adrenal surgery while the symptoms had
disappeared he might see that the gland had shrunken
in size as well and he wouldn't be able to tell which
gland to take. He opted to wait until the symptoms
remained for a month or more and didn't go away.

Nyssa had adrenal surgery nine months later at the age
of four, and she did, in fact have a diseased left
gland.

We are currently starting to go through the same thing
with Ella, who is somewhere around three or four years
old (we're not exactly sure). The bad news for Ella
is that she had her left gland out in January, so we
are looking at her being bilateral. Our vet said
basically the same thing as our previous vet: it's
probably adrenal, but considering the difficulties and
potential for complications newly bilateral ferrets
face she'd like to wait until she's 100% sure. Once
the symptoms stay and/or progress Ella will almost
certainly have adrenal surgery.

The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet, just a
ferret owner relaying experience with a grand total of
two ferrets, which is hardly a scientific sample.

All the best,
Caity and the fantastic five
