Hi, Liz, and everyone else,
First, Sukie gave you an excellent response. Whatever
you do you don't want to take away the adrenal
products provided by the medication. The lethargy and
loss of appetite you saw before fludrocortisone and
prednisolone were started were classic symptoms of
surgically induced Addison's Disease. The fact that
those symptoms went away means your vet prescribed the
proper amount of each medication to bring the
electrolytes into balance. If the meds are
discontinued, as Sukie pointed out, there could well
be imbalance again and that could lead to Addisonian
symptoms or a full blown Addisonians Crisis (the crash
you've already seen), which would be life threatening
in short order.
In addition to the explanation Sukie gave (an adrenal
remnant) there is also the possibility of ectopic
adrenal tissue: adrenal tissue that has grown
somewhere else other than where the normal glands
would be. It is not unheard of for a ferret to need a
third adrenal surgery. OTOH, the ectopic tissue is
often small and hard to find. As Sukie pointed out,
many vets would opt for lupron and/or melatonin at
this point.
In any case Sukie is absolutely correct that a vet
visit is in order. You probably should have her
electrolytes checked since she may well be producing
at least some adrenal products on her own.
All the best,
Caity and the furious five
