His glucose was 139 when he was diagnosed. This was after a 6 hour
fast. The vet made his diagnosis based on symptoms and the high
occurrence of insulinoma in ferrets. I too, was surprised because I
knew that 139 was very good, even slightly above normal. But he
explained that with insulinoma, the glucose can be normal one day,
but low the next, so I assumed that meant that Duke was just having a
good day. The vet mentioned doing a follow-up glucose test after his
4 month prescription ran out. He has a month supply left yet, but
we're not waiting until then. So, at this point he has had no
re-testing done. How often should this usually be done?

What else can cause some of these symptoms? The more info I am armed
with, the better my new vet and I can tackle this problem. And now
considering that there could be other possibilities here, I agree
that blood work is likely in order.

No, I don't allow sweets, and no other treats or food were given
before his glucose test.

I absolutely agree. The vet that told me this isn't my normal vet,
and does not do surgery. Long story short, my regular vet isn't
returning, and has brought in a vet that doesn't take care of
ferrets. I'm currently looking for an experienced surgeon, and
already have a new vet for all other medical care (she doesn't
perform surgeries).

And this is what we want for Duke.
