Subject: [ferrethealth] Right after 2nd adrenal removal - How to proceed?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I have had a few bilateral adrenals, and never had one suffer or die.
Only a small percent of bilaterals become at risk for addison's post op.

What do you mean by suffering?
I would suspect something else is going on, the ferret can die from
Addison's
if not treated properly, but it is not that common that you would be
seeing
this condition often or a ferret recover from it without treatment.

If both adrenals are totally gone ( sometimes the right can't be totally
removed)
then a shot of percorten and decadron post op, then you monitor the
electrolytes and see if there is a continued need for these replacement
hormones.
Sometimes just prednisone is needed, sometimes pred and florinef ( or
percorten).
Florinef and pred are oral and given daily. If percorten is used instead
of florinef,
then percorten is injected and given every 21-28 days. Dosing is
started on a
per kg weight basis and adjusted as needed based on the ferret's symptoms
and sodium to potassium ratio ( seen in the electrolyte test).

Even if the ferret doesn't get these meds or the dosing is not right, the
signs of
addison's is something the owner and vet should look for.
Then if it does happen fluids, give the shots, keep ferret warm, hand
feedings, etc.
No reason the ferret can't pull through and do well.

Monitoring the electrolytes and the ferret will tell your vet how to
adjust the meds.

The doses can be found in any good text on ferret medicine or search the
archives here.
Also, if you search the archives here there have been some excellent
posts
on addison's and bilateral adrenals in ferrets.
