Yes, there are genetics problems in some Australian ferrets, partly because the genetic pool is so narrow.
Dr. John Lewington, a veterinarian has investigated some serious genetic flaws in Black Eyed Whites and Sterlings there. I suggest that you consider getting his ferret vet text.
