Subject: [ferrethealth] Ear Infections
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

I had come down with the flu and gave it to my ferrets. This was back before I knew that ferrets didn't catch colds. Because of my ignorance, I thought they caught a cold and did not worry too much about it. All of my ferrets contracted influenza from me, and each one had ear infections which discharged bloody pus. I lost one of my ferrets within a few days, and almost lost another three because of it. Taz was weakened from this condition and died a few months later, never having fully recovered. Jaws had a stroke of some kind, best that we can tell, and Sid has a permanent head tilt, both problems resulting from their inner ear damage. They both made it, however, and are doing fine although somewhat handicapped. From what I understand, the ear infections were secondary bacterial infections.

Have your ferrets had any sort of viral problems?

The main thing is to treat them with antibiotics immediately, which I'm sure you've already done. As a matter if fact, any time any of my ferrets get any viral infections, such as influenza, I will put them on preventative antibiotics to head off any possible secondary bacterial infections.

On another related note: I came down with the flu the day after taking the flu shot. From what I understand, I already had the flu and the vaccine exacerbated my condition, kind of like a flu booster of sorts. It was probably the worst flu I had ever contracted. I remember having the same exact symptoms my ferrets eventually showed; cold-like symptoms and ear problems. I never put two and two together until after the fact.

:There were no cross contaminated articles to spread it and we always wash:our hands after doing anything with a ferret in a compromised health:situation. I have not heard of anyone who has had a ferret with ear:infections...
