Subject: [ferrethealth] Mass in stomach, diarrhea, went downhill quickly
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Romana is a seven year old extremely petite (<1 lb.) spayed female ferret. Her only previous medical problem was adrenal disease. Her left adrenal gland was removed four years ago. She's had no symptoms and no known medical problems since. Last Monday she had her distemper vaccine and her annual checkup and was given a clean bill of health.

Late last week Romana was acting out of sorts and started having stomach issues (intermittent diarrhea) which made us think of a bug of some sort. Her regular vet is out until Tuesday so the plan was to bring her in then. By today the diarrhea was constant and purely liquid. By this evening it was obvious she was in trouble and was rushed to the nearest emergency clinic that knows about ferrets.

What they found was a mass in her stomach. They could palpitate it and they don't think it's a blockage. Romana was also quite dehydrated. She was put on fluids and bloodwork was done: CBC, chem panel, glucose. The only thing obviously wrong was low blood glucose. She probably has insulinoma. There is no sign of infection, renal failure, organ failure, or anything at all terribly out of the ordinary. I should have all the blood values to post in the morning for the vets on list to look at. In any case they are keeping Romana overnight and will get her to our backup vet (truly outstanding, just far from home) in the morning assuming that vet is available.

What I'm looking for are suggestions or ideas as to what might be wrong. Tumors generally don't grow from nothing that can be detected in a week's time, do they? That still has me thinking blockage but... not a complete blockage since she was able to go to the litter pan at least a little.

Anyway, any thoughts that can be passed on to her vet would be really appreciated about now, in addition to good thoughts sent Romana's way.

All the best,
Caity, the worried four, and Romana
