My experience has been that the deaths before age 3 (or even age 5) are seen
the majoirty of the time in the farm bred ferrets. As for responisble
private breeders a death before age five should be an extreme rarity. My
personal opinion is that that range should be extended to a death before age
7 but I am trying to be realistic and include the norm for the majority of
US "good" private breeders at this time. The vast majority of ferrets in
the US are from the large commerical breeding facilities. As they have no
way to track lines once kits are sold to the retail establishments genetic
problems are left unchecked in many cases, combine that with the early
spay/neuter practices, lack of proper vaccination for young kits and extreme
stress with young shipping ages and it really isn't surprising that
Americans see such a difference in health and age span for these ferrets. I
beleive an interesting comparision would be with privately bred US ferrets
life spans and health issues compared to foreign bred ferrets. I suspect the
differences may not be that glaring using the above criteria.

Just my opinion

Tara
