Subject: [ferrethealth] HELP: insoluma turned diabetes
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Help! We have a seven year old ferret who develped insuloma two years ago after haveing adrenal surgery. We have treated her with pred for the last two years, with what we thought was much success. A few months ago we noticed the familar balding patern of adrenal disease. She has a tumor in her right adrenal gland. It was decided that because of her age and the insuloma we would not do the surgery on her. We are treating the adrenal tumor with melation implants. When we got the initial implant we ran a blood panal on her and discovered that her blood glucose was up in the 400 range. We imdeately began backing her off of her pred. As we did her glucose came down somewhat. She is now off of the pred and her blood glucose is ranging from 250-350. She has sugar and ketones in her urine. Our vet has never heard of this happening in her experience with ferrets. I have done some research, but I cannot find anything to tell us how to treat the diabetes or what to do with our sick little girl. Any information would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!
