Subject: [ferrethealth] Hydrochlorthiazide and octreotide for insulinoma?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com, CandiceBush@aol.com

Tiki the ferret's medical history is as follows:

-Approximately 5 years old,
-2 pounds
-asplenic (removed 2 years ago for severe enlargement)
-with adrenal disease with no adrenal lesions visible this March during
pancreas surgery, but with hair loss and elevated hormones on the Ferret
Adrenal Panel
-pancreas surgery in March of this year for insulinoma, but blood glucose
remains low 20's and 30's with daily episodes of weakness and retching.
Between episodes Tiki is active and playful.

Treatment is with the following:
prednisone 0.6 mg bid
diazoxide 7 mg bid
lupron depot monthly
Chicken soup several times daily in addition to ferret kibbles

??????????'s:
1. I have read that hydrochlorthiazide can increase the response to
diazoxide but I can't find the dose in ferrets. My previous ferret doctor died in
March, bless her, and my new ferret doctor is less experienced. I would like
to know the dose range of HCTZ in ferrets as I am considering asking my vet if
she would add this to Tiki's regimen.

2. I have also read that a drug called sandostatin/octreotide might also
help improve blood glucose, although I suspect the cost may be too prohibitive.
Have you ever used this med in ferrets or other small animals? How
expensive was it? Did it help?

3. Other suggestions?

Thankyou so much for your thoughts.
