Subject: [ferrethealth] My ferret's health
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hello, I just joined this group and wanted to ask a couple of questions to anybody who might have any more insight on what my ferret is going through.

She is a spayed "marshall" ferret.

She is just turning 7 years old and she has been through about 4 surgeries.

1st surgery was a chordoma on her tail, the doctor just snipped part of the tail off.

2nd surgery was adrenal disease and the doctor removed one of the adrenal glands.

3rd surgery was to remove hairballs,

and the 4th one was this past July for another adrenal gland problem in which the doctor removed all the adrenal glands.

This I believe leads into her current condition now.

She is playful and ALWAYS has been. She eats well. But the big problem is that she is losing her hair badly. She is basically at the point where she has no more hair now except for her head. I give her pedipred (.3cc) at night daily. And she goes to the doctor once a month for a precortinin injection. Her blood tests have always been fine but the very last one they said she had a high liver level. (not sure what that means) when she first showed the signs of losing hair about 4 months ago they had me try (melatonin) but that did not seem to do anything. I asked the doctor most recently if her hair loss was something that i should be concerned about and he said no. But isnt this hair loss being caused by something? Isn't it a sign of something? Or is it just because of no more adrenal glands? Do you think she will ever be able to regrown hair again, or is it an age thing? I didn't think animals were supposed to lose their hair even if they are old.

I'm not sure what the pedipred does... is that the right medicine i should be giving. Or is this high liver level now a big problem? Believe me i have asked these questions to my ferret specialist doctor, but he never gives me a straight answer. So I ask these questions of anybody that may know.

Thank you
