Subject: [ferrethealth] telling age
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I just got a male ferret that had been abandoned in an apartment by it's previous owner. Obviously neglected, thin, very long nails, dirty. He only weighs 1 pound 12 ounces. He quite small and I don't know why; if it's age, or neglect. Is there a way to tell age (like by teeth) that has any accuracy? He also quite bald, and if he's older, I will suspect adrenal disease. Could it also be from long term malnutrition? I have a vet appointment Wed with a vet that kows ferrets and will get some blood work done. Right now, I've cleaned him up, snipped the nails and started him on a high quality kitten food with an energy gel for a treat. Anything else for a ferret needing help, but eating and drinking well? He's **very** sweet and I can't imagine someone just leaving him behind to die.
