Subject: [ferrethealth] elevated insulin level = insulinoma? long post....sorry
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
This story is much more complicated that i will explain here. i will just say that I have a 5 yr old male adrenal ferret, been adrenal since 3, had left removed, symptoms came back, been treating with lupron (500 mcg per month) and melatonin implant. his spleen is enlarged (hematopoiesis diagnosis via ultrasound. he had what seemed like an insulinoma seizure 2 months ago (flat out on the floor, unresponsive) and has been on pred since. i must add that the episode may not have been insulinoma induced, as he was shut in the door on accident prior to this and was found to be anemic via CBC profile (dont have exact number on me). the anemia cleared up after 4 days though (though on the low end of the normal range). the issue is his glucose has never been really low, and i dont want him to be on another med if it isnt necessary. his glucose was 130 immediately after the episode (was given karo syrup and dex, which helped bring him around), and then 140 4 hours later. i waited one week, then did a fasting flucose, 12 hours no pred. his glucose then was 90. i have since decreased his pred more, but another vet recommmend an insulin level, as 90 isn't so bad, but could be insulinoma. his insulin level was 100, which is elevated. As of now he is on 0.25 mls of pedia pred once a day, and has been doing great since the episode. is it safe to assume insulinoma? what about lymphoma? he does have enlarged lymph nodes, though two vets have said it is just fat deposits around them. i worry about the fact that his spleen is enlarged and he appeared to be anemic during the episode...sorry for the long confusing post. i just need some advice. i have issues finding good ferret vets...
